Our Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy approach

Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy is an evidence based comprehensive approach for many psychological and emotional difficulties. It enables people to become aware of inner barriers that affect life and helps master those inner barriers that are out of conscious control. Think of psychoanalytical psychotherapy like peeling back the layers of an onion, and with each layer the causes and significance of our symptoms become more and more evident and may eventually disappear as the client learns how to manage their internal world. Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy can be particularly beneficial for people presenting following difficulties:
  • Personality Disorders: Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder
  • Anxiety disorders including Panic Attacks, Social Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
  •  Depression
  • Couples experiencing relationship difficulties

Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are deeply ingrained patterns of behaviour rooted from early developmental conflicts maintained by unconscious processes and defense mechanisms and distinctively presenting issues in their relationship with others. There is a range of disorders that fall into this umbrella of personality disorders including antisocial, narcissistic, schizoid, paranoid, and borderline personality disorders among a few. The main goals of therapy includes uncovering and resolving these underlying issues in order to promote a healthier and more adaptive functioning in their relationship with others.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders can be associated to problematic early attachments and relationships. Negative experiences in early relationships (object relations) can lead to internalized fears and anxieties that manifest later in life. Issues like separation anxiety and fear of abandonment often trace back to these early interactions. There are a number of conditions that are linked to anxiety disorders including social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorders, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder among others. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy attempts to enhance emotional expression, strengthening the ego, improving object relations, facilitating insight and self-awareness and integrating anxiety into self.

Depression

Depression is characterised as presenting unconscious guilt, exaggerated sorrow. Experienced as a loss of a significant relationship, it is a traumatic experience of loss, inadequate mourning, and excessive self-criticism. Dysfunctional early attachments and experiences of abandonment and neglect may contribute to depressive patterns by creating internal representations of relationships that are fraught with ambivalence and loss. The goals in psychoanalytical psychotherapy approach for depression included a deep exploration of the person’s internal world aiming for a long-term emotional healing and personal growth.

Couples experiencing relationship difficulties

Couples’ relationships are profoundly influenced by unconscious processes, early attachment experiences, and intrapsychic conflicts. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy aims to explore each partner’s internal world, the history of the relationship, motivation and behaviour. Therapy helps couples to understand developmental stages and mutual growth. Couples often face developmental challenges at different stages of their relationship, such as forming a committed partnership, navigating parenthood, or dealing with midlife transitions. Therapy helps couples understand and negotiate these stages, promoting mutual growth and adaptation. Overall, couple’s therapy uncovers and address these underlying factors to promote healthier, more adaptive relationships.
